Today I had a fabulous brunch with Gayle at Kanela in Old Town. (There is also a location in Lakeview.) They have such a great selection of breakfast and lunch items to choose from! The red velvet french toast (with cream cheese frosting, fresh strawberries, and creme anglaise) and bacon waffle (chocolate bacon, bourbon caramel, and bacon powder) looked tempting, but I generally prefer a hearty protein base to start off my day. I ordered the skillet of the day, which contained duck, scallions, tomatoes, cheese and red potatoes--very similar to their duck confit hash. Gayle ordered and enjoyed her eggs benedict, which had slow roasted pork belly, brussels sprouts, poached eggs, dried cranberries, house hollandaise, and english muffin. Julius Meinl coffee complemented our meal!
